“Stay in the moment, and be Dewald Brevis”

By MI Cape Town Media

It feels like he’s been around forever in the larger MI family, but make no mistake, Dewald Brevis is just 19. He set the tournament on fire with his batting in the first game against the Paarl Royals, and now, after a couple of tough results, the circle is complete as we get set to face the Royals again in a bid to find our winning momentum. On the sidelines at practice, here he is, in an exclusive chat with MI Cape Town. Excerpts ..

Thoughts on how the SA20 has been so far

The tournament has been going great. Enjoyed every moment with the boys at our home at  Newlands. It’s a special place. I have already had a lot of learnings from our coaches and our players. Every game is a new game, new conditions and new things to look out for. I just want to stay in the moment and enjoy everything.

On working with the coaching staff - Simon Katich, Hashim Amla and Robin Peterson

It has helped a lot. They share new things. There are new ways in which they give information. Hashim (Amla) is a great person and a great coach. He brings a calmness and helps me with a lot of things. Same with coach Simon (Katich), he has been amazing. Coach Robbie (Robin Peterson) has been amazing with my bowling. We speak about things going on in the match.

On his approach for the rest of the tournament

It’s a new day. Lot of things to look for. I have to play the conditions and stay in the moment. The games in the past are finished and I just want to stay true to myself.

On his cricketing strengths

Just being myself, being Dewald Brevis. I just want to be true to myself and enjoy it.

Playing under Rashid Khan

Rashid is an amazing player. He has the experience of playing around the world. To be able to share a dressing room with him, to spend time with him has been great. Great player, great leader, and great to have him in our side.

Looking forward to the reverse fixture against the Paarl Royals

I am always looking forward to every single game I play. It’s a new game. New conditions. New players. We stay in the moment and face what we get.

On the challenges of playing turn at Boland Park

Always a good thing to have challenges. Stay in the moment, play ball by ball, and enjoy it. Just be yourself and enjoy every ball you face.

On the crowds at Newlands

The crowd has been amazing. They have been backing us every single ball. To make them proud and to have them supporting us is something we enjoy very much.

Having his family watching him at Newlands

It’s been great. My brother and my family is always there with me. To have them next to the field at Newlands is something I enjoyed very much. To spend time after the games and to have them spend time with the MI family, meet new people, everyone from the coaching staff, is something they enjoyed too. Lovely to have them also being a part of MI.
